Cheryl Cole’s fears ahead of her morale-boosting trip to British troops in war-torn Afghanistan
CHERYL Cole has spoken about the fears she conquered to make her morale-boosting mission to our troops in Afghanistan.
Ahead of her trip last month to Camp Bastion, the plucky Girls Aloud singer was left in no doubt that there would be gunfire and bombs going off. That by flying into a war zone she was putting her life in danger. But “nothing was going to stop me”...
Yesterday Cheryl, 28, who jetted in from New York for tonight’s Pride of Britain Awards, told me: “Before I went out I was given war training which was pretty full-on and quite scary.
“They warn you about coping with all kinds of scary scenarios – things like having a gun put to your head.
“I was warned before I went out there that it could be dangerous. But nothing was going to stop me from going. And I’m just so glad I did.”
It’s hardly surprising she was determined to go. On a personal level, Cheryl has been through the wars herself.
She has survived malaria, a divorce and being axed from X Factor USA – and still come out fighting. She has been busy Stateside working on her hotly-anticipated new album, and has filmed scenes for her first Hollywood movie What To Expect When You’re Expecting, co-starring Cameron Diaz.
Cheryl, who will join a host of stars at tonight’s Littlewoods.com sponsored event, added: “Afghanistan was an unbelievable experience. The whole trip was incredible. Since I’ve been back, it’s all anyone wants to talk to me about. The reaction has been fantastic. The men and women I met out there were inspirational, and so amazingly brave and dedicated.
“I’ve stayed in touch with some of the troops through Twitter and they’ve been sending nice messages. It was a privilege to see what goes on out there.”
And, of course, there’s no harm in mixing a little work with pleasure...
Cheryl told me when she got back: “Not only are the soldiers incredibly brave, a few were also incredibly cute. I came back with a phone number. He started chatting to me – I think it was for a dare – after I’d been ‘shot’ during a training exercise. It wasn’t real ammunition but it was still terrifying.
“I think I’ll call him this week and we’ll see what happens. I’m sure he’s not expecting me to ring but that’s why it’ll be funny – and that’s why I’m going to do it.”
